This writing session aims to provide a toolkit for any writers considering writing from the Black male perspective or including characters who are Black and male in their projects.
Shaped by my own experiences as a second-year PhD student writing The 392 and my novel-in-progress The B Word is Black, this masterclass is an exploration of the process of writing Black male voices as seen in works by Sam Selvon, Guy Gunaratne, Stephen Kelman, JJ Bola, Robyn Travis and more.
The masterclass acknowledges the complex make-up of depicting the Black male experience in fiction: problematises existing limited depictions and begins to address the importance of embedding a sensitive backstory that subverts the problematic generalisations of what the Black male experience entails.
The talk/workshop/masterclass is a response to this Guardian article.
All tickets include a complimentary 5 day pass for writing at Clean Prose (usually valued at £100). All 5 day passes will be distributed at the event to attendees.
